Helping to grow your eBay business

Expand Into Auctions

Glossary

1. DSR

Detailed Seller Rating: Once you have received more than 10 feedbacks as a seller you and anyone else will be able to view how you have been rated on 4 separate areas of the transaction. You can view your DSR on your eBay Feedback Profile page.

2. external hosting

You will need to find a website that will "host" or hold your photos for you. Photobucket is a reliable website that will host your photos for free. You will need to create an account and upload the photos you wish to use in your auction listing onto their website. They will provide you with the URL of the photos that you then add to the template. This then allows the photos to be viewed by anyone else looking at your auction listing.

3. generator

template "generator": where you can have input into the design of the template by choosing colours and background tiles. The HTML code is generated from the choices you make.

4. HTML

HyperText Markup Language: is the code behind all webpages. Right click on a web page and choose View Page Source - the information you see wrapped between <> tags is called HTML.

5. HTML editor

This is the tab within the Description Editor of the SYI form that allows you to insert/edit the HTML code of your item description.

6. keywords

Keywords: are simply words that people use to describe something that they are looking for. Keywords may be a single word or a phrase. The more keywords you use, the narrower will be the search results. Example: I am searching for a digital camera of a certain make and model. If I simply type in camera, the search will yield all listings (all makes and all models) with camera in the title. However I can narrow my search by adding more keywords: Canon digital EOS 400D will return only those listings with that particular make and model - exactly what I am looking for. What terms are buyers using to find your product? Use as many as possible.

7. listing description

Within the SYI form is the Description Editor. There are two tabs: Standard and HTML. The Standard Tab uses the WYSIWYG editor that allows you to edit/format the text you insert for your item description. The HTML editor shows the HTML code and this is where you place the HTML code of your template.

8. on-site hosting

The website will "host" or hold your photos for you on their servers. You need to have your photos "hosted" somewhere on the internet so that other people can see your pictures. The website will include the url of where the photo is located within the template. eBay will host one picture on their servers for you for free, but then charge you a fee for each additional photo. Therefore it is good to find someone else who will host more than one for free.

9. phishing

phishing as in "fishing" for information. Scammers create emails that look like they do come from a well-known site such as your bank or eBay. They make up some believable story about why they need you to click on the link provided and access your account. When you click on the link you are taken to a website that will look exactly like your Bank site or eBay. When you login with your account number and password it is being tracked and now the scammers have your details to which they can go to the real site, log in and change the password so that you can no longer access your account yourself. Tricky, huh?

10. ready to use

"ready to use" templates: the template has already been created and you just need to add your item description and seller information.

11. Sell Your Item

SYI: this is the standard form you use to create an auction listing on the eBay website. It is located by clicking on the Sell tab at the top of each eBay page.

12. standard editor

A tab on the Description Editor within the SYI form. The standard editor allows you to edit/format text that will appear as your item description within your auction listing.

13. SYI

Sell Your Item: this is the standard form you use to create an auction listing on the eBay website. It is located by clicking on the Sell tab at the top of each eBay page.

14. Turbo Lister

Turbo Lister is eBay's FREE listing tool. It downloads onto your computer so that you can create and manage your listings offline.
